Report on Kelvin opportunities due soon

A THINK-TANK charged with promoting R&D, innovation and a knowledge-based economy in Northern Ireland has been asked to report on the potential market opportunities arising from the multi-million pounds transatlantic Project Kelvin telecommunication link-up.

The MATRIX panel is a business led science industry panel formed to advise the Executive on how best to commercially exploit R&D and science and technology here.

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has asked it to conduct a study on Project Kelvin and it is expected to report on the matter shortly.

Foyle SDLP MLA Mary Bradley asked the Minister what action her Department was taking to encourage cross-border projects in the North West by harnessing the potential of Project Kelvin.

She replied: "Officials from my Department have been actively engaged with representatives of the North West Region Cross Border Group to provide feedback on a proposed project to seek Interreg IVA funding to utilise the international connectivity resulting from Project Kelvin.

"Project Kelvin is a significant part of our world class telecommunications infrastructure. In order to ensure that we exploit this infrastructure fully, I have asked the MATRIX Panel to conduct a study into market opportunities arising as result of that infrastructure.

"The report will be available shortly."
