Reported crimes down by more than a quarter

THE number of crimes reported in the Moyle area has fallen by over a quarter, latest figures show.

At a meeting in Cushendall on Thursday evening, police delivered the latest crime figures for the past nine months to the Moyle District Policing Partnership.

From April to December 2010 there were 552 crimes recorded in Moyle, representing a 26.7% reduction on the number (753) for the same period the previous year.

The current overall clearance rate is 21.1% - a reduction of 0.9% - on the figure for the same period previously.

PSNI Area Commander for Moyle, John Magill, said local people have a pivotal role to play in the battle against crime in the district.

“My Neighbourhood Policing Team under the leadership of Inspector Bryan Hume continues to work with the community in Moyle on numerous matters,” he said.

“Local officers from my Neighbourhood Policing Team and Response continue to be supported by other personnel within H District including CID, Crime Team, Public Protection Unit and Community Safety. This is in addition to support provided by Roads Policing and Tactical Support Group.

Police need the support of the community in Moyle and I would appeal to the community to report any suspicious activity to Police and continue to follow some basic crime prevention advice - secure your home when you go out, don’t keep large sums of money at home, be wary of unannounced callers to your home, never let anyone into your home unless you are certain of their identity and are satisfied they have a legitimate reason for calling, do not leave valuables in your vehicle and remember to lock your vehicle even if it is unattended for only a short period of time. Free crime prevention advice is available from your Crime Prevention Officer based at Coleraine police station.

“My Neighbourhood and Response officers will continue to look out for those driving above the speed limit, the illegal use of mobile phones, careless and dangerous driving, failure to wear seatbelts and those drinking and driving/taking drugs and driving.

“Roads Policing Units regularly patrol the Moyle area and also target these offences together with careless and dangerous driving including ‘donutting’. All reports of this will be investigated by police. Those convicted can expect penalty points, a fine or a ban. Please drive safely - for those who refuse to heed this advice, it is only a matter of time before you are caught and brought before the courts.

“Finally I would like to thank the community in Moyle and the District Policing Partnership for their continued support.”
