Residents angered by planning decision

MEMBERS of a residents' association in Ballymena say they're "furious" at the decision by planners to permit a development in their midst despite opposition by both their group and local councillors.

Under the planning proposal, five bungalows will be replaced by 35 units comprising two-storey apartments, townhouses and semi-detached properties at 299-305 Ballymoney Road.

In a statement on the issue, ‘Ballymoney Road Area Resident’s Association’, which represents over 300 people living in the locality, say residents are particularly angry that the views of local people “have been over-ruled by faceless bureaucrats at County Hall”.

The group extended thanks to Ballymena Council and said they appreciate its efforts on behalf of the residents.

Their statement continued: “Elderly residents, particularly, fear the social impact of this type of overcrowded development already experienced in the Rosses.

“In addition, residents are also fearful of the impact on the already overloaded sewage and storm water systems in the area. These problems are well documented, and in particular their knock-on effect on systems in the south of the town.

Residents feel that this overdevelopment is totally unnecessary.

“Residents will, however, be keeping the development under tight scrutiny and if plans are changed, they will be seeking immediate enforcement by the planners”.
