Residents clean up in Drumbeg

A team of 35 local residents from the Drumbeg area have got together to help tidy up heavily grassed verges and kerbing.

Mr Hugh Cruikshanks, the Chairman of the Drumbeg residents association who organised the event, said: “I recently read an article in the by Cllr Robbie Butler challenging us all to help keep Lagan Valley tidy.

“This piece stimulated some conversation in our group and we decided to act and improve the look and feeling of our area.”

Mr Cruikshanks delivered an information leaflet to all the houses in the immediate area and was astonished to see 35 willing volunteers turn up, tools at the ready and ready to work.

Local Councillors Brian Bloomfield, Alex Redpath and Robbie Butler also turned up to lend a hand.

“I commend the effort and actions of Mr Cruikshanks and the volunteers on the night and I was personally delighted to be available to lend a hand,” Mr Cruikshanks went on.

“We are at present organising a larger clean up event on Saturday June 27 when we hope to have four teams of fifteen people, each taking a specific area and armed with resources provided by Lisburn & Castlereagh Council tidying up and restoring that sense of pride in our area.”
