Local residents spoke of their horror when trees had been set alight in the Victoria Gardens area at around 10.30pm.

It is understood two appliances from the NI Fire and Rescue Service arrived to extinguish the flames.

One local resident blamed a gang of youths who had been drinking and taking drugs in the area around that time.

The resident said: “It is a disgrace. I was told by the fireman that with the wind, if the flames had of taken hold, it could be that the electricity sub station would be out and oil tanks would have flared.

People could have died,” said the resident.

“When will they learn that their actions have consequences,” said the resident.
