They also hope the creation of a formal group will provide a forum for local issues to be raised such as the need for an increased police presence and maintenance of open spaces and alleyways.

Residents were met recently by DUP respresentatives David McIlveen MLA and Ballymena Major Audrey Wales who confirmed support for the plans.

Mr McIlveen said: “Myself and Councillor Wales were contacted by local residents in the Princes Street area, who had concerns that this location and its surrounds had been slightly left behind. The area has had some issues over the years, but this is starting to be addressed. In no small part, that is, thanks to the work being done by local residents and I strongly support them in their efforts to create a residents association.

“The group are keen to see some changes taking place. This includes such basic steps as maintenance of open spaces, parks and alley ways. They are also keen to see greater policing presence and the extension of community wardens to this part of town, which is something I hope to assist with through my role as a member of the Northern Ireland Policing Board. The DUP at both council and Assembly level are highly supportive of these measures and have been working hard to ensure they come to fruition.”

Councillor Audrey Wales said: “I am delighted to assist the Princes Street residents in their efforts. It is fantastic to see local people take such civic pride and work hard for the betterment of their local community. This area has had its issues over the years but there is no doubt that the tide is changing. I look forward to working with the residents over the coming months and years to ensure that the changes they are seeking are achieved.

“This is an exciting time for the area and I am delighted to be involved.”
