Restoration project placed in danger because of theft

EFFORTS to restore a 400-year-old cottage in County Donegal may have been scuppered because of the actions of callous thieves.

The revamp of the cottage at Raphoe has been a labour of love for young couple Helen Hancock and Ian Holyoak who were living in a caravan whilst the restoration was taking place.

The couple were going to sell the caravan, valued at €10,000, to complete the thatching of the dwelling's roof, but the plans have now been abandoned because of the theft.

Ms Hancock has said she believes the thieves had come prepared.

"They had to bring a spare wheel as one was tied to the gas tank. I felt so secure, but since this has happened I haven't been able to sleep at night it's so bad," she told the BBC.

The couple had lived in the Avondale touring caravan for two years whilst the cottage was being restored. Recently it had been used as a home for volunteers from around the globe who were working on the restoration project.
