Restrained by public in Co-op

A BALLYCARRY man who had to be restrained by members of the public at Larne's Co-op store has been fined at the local court this week.

William Sittlington, 27, of Main Street, appeared at Larne Magistrates Court on Friday and pleaded guilty to using disorderly behaviour at the supermarket on March 12.

The prosecution lawyer told the court that police had been called to a disturbance at the store at about 6pm. When officers arrived, the accused was being restrained by members of the public and was being abusive. She added that Sittlington was then handcuffed and arrested “for the safety of officers and the public”.

Sittlington’s defence lawyer said his client had taken “a large amount of alcohol” prior to the incident and struggled to remember what happened. He added that the accused was “deeply embarrassed” by his actions and regretted his behaviour.

District Judge Robert Alcorn imposed a fine of 300. Sittlington was also bound over to keep the peace for a period of 19 months.
