Resurfacing work will 'enhance safety' of Cookstown road

A £400,000 resurfacing scheme at Cookstown is expected to be completed early in February.

Local SDLP Councillor Kerri Hughes welcomed the start of the work on Killeenan Road, Kildress, covering around 3.8km from Drum Road to the Loughdoo Road.

The resurfacing is scheduled to be completed by February 12, weather permitting.

Cllr Hughes said, “Having highlighted the poor condition of the road surface along this stretch of the Killeenan Road with the department some time ago, I welcome the start of the resurfacing work.

“When completed this will greatly improve the strength and quality of the road surface and enhance safety for all road users.

“There will be some disruption during this time with the Killeenan Road closed to

through traffic, between the Drum Road and the Loughdoo Road, for the

duration of the works.

“A two-way traffic diversion will be in operation along the Loughdoo Road and Drum Road, with diversions sign-posted as necessary.

“I will continue to work with the department to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum and the resurfacing is completed as quickly as possible.

“The roads network is an important lifeline for rural communities and is essential for the success of our local economy.

“The SDLP will continue to argue for a properly resourced road maintenance programme to ensure that the rural roads network is maintained to the highest possible standard.”
