Rethinking women’s role

ST AUGUSTINE’S Church is the venue for a thought-provoking discussion with Scottish academic, Dr Fiona MacKay, who will speak on women, politics and quotas with BBC Radio Foyle presenter Sarah Brett.

Dr MacKay is Director of the Graduate School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh and has written widely on women and politics, gender and political institutions and is interested in how institutions of governance (global, regional and local) work in gendered ways and how they can be redesigned to include women and promote gender equality.

The event at St Augustine’s Church is open to anyone interested in achieving a fairer democracy, getting more women into politics and learning about actions undertaken by Scottish non-government organisations, such as the 50:50 campaign which resulted in women gaining more than 30 per cent of the seats in the Scottish parliament.
