Retired health workers enjoy craft demonstration

The Causeway Branch of Health & Social Care Retirement Fellowship Northern Ireland, recommenced on Wednesday 12th September, with an inspiring demonstration of crafts.

Chairman Mrs Kathleen Presha warmly welcomed the guest speaker Mrs Norma Lockington. Mrs Lockington spoke of her long interest in crafts of all sorts. She brought along an amazing variety of crafts and explained how some of them are made.

Some of the crafts shown could be hand sewn, eliminating the need of a sewing machine. Mrs Lockington showed examples of how the hexagonal pieces of material used in patchwork quilting can be adapted to make coasters, table mats or table runners.

She demonstrated how although from one template, cushion covers could be made to look quite different, just by changing the colour of the sewing thread or the material pattern.

Many examples of how to transform small multi aperture photo frames into beautiful ‘New Baby’ keepsakes, retirement or birthday presents gave the members much food for thought. There was also an array of brooches and handbag decorations made from knitted wool flowers, zips and

felt pieces, on display. After seeing her selection of cuddly animals, socks will never be looked at in the same way again!

Mrs Lockington encouraged the group to have a go at a craft, reminding them “it is never too late to try something new.” An opportunity was given to purchase items from the crafts on display, the proceeds going towards ‘Mullingar Presbyterian New Church Build’.

A very enjoyable afternoon was rounded off with the traditional cuppa, before the enthused members headed home with their artistic juices flowing.

New members will be warmly welcomed to the group, which normally meets on the second Wednesday of each month. The only criteria is that you must be a retired health service worker.
