Return of the Race2Recovery Summer Ball

Corporal Phillip Gillespie swapped the sand and rough conditions of Dakar for the glitz and glam of the second ever Race2Recovery Summer Ball on Friday night.

Following the success of last year’s ball to support Barney Gillespie’s part in the Race2Recovery mission, it was held for a second year to celebrate his success in becoming the first amputee to complete the Dakar Rally.

Organise Claire Todd told the Times that she was pleased with how the night went, she said: “Having only been started two years ago, Race2Recovery has achieved an massive amount in such a short time. In January this year they sent four cars and a massive support team out to South America to become the first disabled team to enter the Dakar Rally.

“This in itself was amazing but add into this that the team consisted of some injured servicemen makes it truly inspirational.

“With the team out ready to start the rally a tense and emotionally draining two weeks followed for all those involved and those at home. With a motto ‘Beyond injury, achieving the extraordinary’ I don’t think the team could ever have been fully prepared for how extraordinary the Dakar would be for them. One week in saw only one car remain - Joy . Luckily though a week later saw Team Joy cross the finish line cheered on by the rest of the team.

Speaking about the Summer Ball she added: “I am delighted to say that some of the members of the team travelled over to spend the weekend and attend the Summer Ball at the Rosspark Hotel.

“I must thank Robin Swann MLA for hosting the team at a reception in Stormont during the day which was greatly enjoyed by all. The fund-raiser proved to be a great success once again with almost £2500 being raised. Guests were greeted not only by a red carpet on arrival but by one of the Wildcats that took part in the rally.

“We enjoyed a drinks reception, followed by a 4 course meal which I must congratulate the Rosspark for as everyone thoroughly enjoyed this. I must also thank Leaf Designs for their work in making the room look outstanding. Music was provided by the fantastic ‘Caubeen’ who insured the dance floor was full all night.

“Darren Cumberland of DC Photography was on hand to take photos which people were able to take home with them on the night and Room2race brought along a couple of their simulators which proved a huge success.

“A raffle was also held on the night and I must thank a number of people for their kind donations; The Gentry Barbers, Royale Dry Cleaning, Montgomery’s and Eclipse Furniture. I would also like to say a huge thank you to those who attended and insured the event was a success. If anyone would like to find out more about the Race2Recovery story, I do have a number of copies of their book available. Please e mail me on [email protected] for further info.”
