The Housing Executive is undertaking an examination of the island’s housing need. As part of this work it is hosting an event in partnership with Rathlin Development Community Association on 26 Oct 2016 in the Parochial Hall on Rathlin.

During the day-long event there will be a chance to discuss the potential for a new housing development on the island and a chance to find out more about living in social / affordable housing.

For the island’s home owners the Housing Executive’s grants team will be on hand to discuss the availability of renovation and disabled facilities grants which help people to remain in their own homes for longer. They will also advise on the availability of the boiler replacement and Affordable Warmth schemes which are aimed at improving the energy efficiency of eligible homes.

Sinead Collins from the Housing Executive’s Rural Unit said: “This event on Rathlin will help us determine housing need but it is also a chance for us to showcase what we do to make people’s lives better. We have built a strong partnership with Citizens Advice and they will be at our event to offer advice on a range of issues. We also want to encourage expanding social enterprise in the local community and as we offer grants through our Social Housing Enterprise initiative a member of that team will be on-hand with guidance.

“The Housing Executive is about more than bricks and mortar and has a diverse portfolio which touches many across Northern Ireland in some way. Indeed the importance of rural communities such as Rathlin is recognised and we have a dedicated rural unit within the Housing Executive.”

Michael Cecil (RDCA Chair) said: “We are pleased the Housing Executive is helping to host this event as it shows their commitment to Rathlin’s continued rejuvenation. There are great opportunities on Rathlin to live and work and we want to encourage anyone with an interest in returning to / living on the island to get in touch with the Housing Executive (03448 920 900) to express that interest and complete a simple housing form.”

Primary school children from the local school are being encouraged to see their future on the island by taking part in a competition to design their ‘dream home’ with the winner being announced at the event on 26 Oct.
