At Monday’s council meeting, councillors welcomed £80,000 of funding from the Department of Environment to intervene and improve the look of several derelict buildings in Glengormley and Ballyclare.

Those earmarked for demolition or improve work include two properties on the Mill Road and North End in Ballyclare and three properties along the Antrim Road in Glengormley.

However, Councillor John Scott said more needed to he done: “The entrance to the borough, from the Barron Hall up is a disgrace.

“There are derelict buildings and the police station has gone and the look of the place is absolutely terrible.”

Councillor Billy Webb added: “We also need to look at the entrance to the borough on the Shore Road which has also fallen into disrepair.

“This was an issue I first raised back in 1997 and it is still needing addressed.”

Council development director Majella McAlister responded: “The revitalisation programme for Glengormley should address some of the properties from the Barron Hall up.

“And with the Giro d’Italia passing through the borough it would be hoped that the Shore Road area would be improved ahead of that event.”

Councillor, Alderman Paul Girvan added: “It is important to recognise that this dereliction intervention funding is a relatively small amount of money and yet it has made a real difference and a dramatic impact, particularly in Ballyclare. There has been a lot of positive talk about it.”
