Rewarding Larne’s tidy residents

Larne Council has introduced a pilot scheme for the months of June, July and August whereby those persons identified putting litter in the bin or lifting dog fouling will have their names entered into a draw which will take place at the end of each month.

The name drawn out each month will receive a £50 cheque which is the amount the council receives when a fixed penalty ticket is issued within 10 days for littering or allowing your dog to foul.

Quite rightly, residents demand robust enforcement action and indeed the council has issued more than 20 fixed penalties in the last 4 months.

However, this new initiative helps to reward positive behaviour. The winner for June was Bernie Couglan, of Mark Street, Glenarm. Bernie regularly goes out with her sister and brother-in-law Frances and Jackie Wilson to take part in the clean-ups within the village and along with fellow members of the community volunteer to plant and maintain the floral displays within the village around the marina to enhance the entrance to Glenarm.

On receiving the £50 cheque Bernie Couglan saidthat since her return from the USA she has taken great pride in the village as she was born and grew up in Glenarm.

Larne Mayor, Councillor Maureen Morrow welcomed the initiative to reward those residents within the borough who take civic pride in their area and “do the right thing”.

“It is great to see those within our community being identified, recognised and rewarded for exceptional community spirit and demonstrating a pride in their local area,” she said.

So remember to keep doing the right thing – put littering and dog fouling in the bin and next month who knows it could be you.
