Rise in jobless total

THE dole queue in Craigavon got significantly longer with 123 new claimants signing on in August.

It brings the total number of unemployment benefit claimants to 2,198 for the borough - a rise in 4.3 per cent from last month's figures.

The overall rise in unemployment in the past year is 9.6% representing 263 new claimants in the 12 months up to August 2010.

In the same period 147 redundancies have been announced in Craigavon. This puts the borough fifth in the redundancy league table behind Belfast (983), Derry (515), Castlereagh (323) and Newry and Mourne (207).
