The Minister, who was there at the invitation of local UUP MLA Robin Swann, revealed a substantial increase in passenger numbers for the Londonderry rail line.

His figures showed that between 2010/11 and 2013/14, the number of passenger journeys on the line had jumped by almost 550,000 to more than 1.7 million.

Mr Swann said: “This is tremendous news for the Londonderry rail line which runs right through the heart of the North Antrim constituency and I warmly welcome this terrific boost in numbers.

“It was also great to see my party colleague and Executive Minister Danny Kennedy accept my invitation to visit Ballymena station and see the rail service in action at first hand.

“It also shows that Minister Kennedy’s initiatives to get more people using public transport are working effectively,” said Assemblyman Swann.
