Ritchie puts pressure on Cameron over Saville

SDLP Leader Margaret Ritchie today met British Prime Minister David Cameron raising issues such as the publication of the Saville Report, increased devolved powers for Northern Ireland and protection of the block grant.

Speaking after the meeting at Stormont House she said: "Earlier this week in Westminster, my colleague Mark Durkan and I took the opportunity to meet the Secretary of State and reiterate our opinion that the Saville Report into the events of Bloody Sunday are published as swiftly as possible.

"Today at a meeting with the David Cameron I outlined once again why the report must be placed into the public domain without undue delay and that the rights of the families of the bereaved and injured are respected.

"The grievous wrongs of Bloody Sunday are well known to the people of Derry, of the wider island and beyond.

"The time for the truth to be set free has long past and the publication of the Saville Report cannot come soon enough.

"Mr Cameron told me today the report will be published within weeks and the SDLP will continue to put pressure on the British establishment to ensure this is a priority.

"During the meeting with Mr Cameron I also told him that the devolution of policing and justice must be seen as the beginning of the end of this first phase of politics in Northern Ireland.

"There is still much more to be done and the SDLP will be fighting hard for more devolved powers including fisheries, telecommunications and broadcasting to name a few.

"Currently the only leverage we have on the economy in Northern Ireland is expenditure from the block grant, therefore it is important we do all we can to maximise our regional interest and do our best to protect against cuts in the meantime until we are granted more fiscal latitude."
