RNLI choir in harmony for lifeboat funds

LARNE lifeboat volunteers helped to keep Christmas shoppers in buoyant mood when they sang out to raise funds in Belfast recently.

Barry Kirkpatrick, Lee Stirling, Schott Leitch, Pamela Dorman and Fiona Hamilton were among 11 crew members from three RNLI stations who formed a choir to sing carols in the Victoria Square Centre. The RNLI is Victoria Square’s chosen charity of the year and well on course to reach their £30,000 target before the partnership ends next March.

The lifeboat volunteers from Larne, Bangor and Donaghadee had never sung together before and had no time for rehearsal before the event, but went down a storm, drawing much praise from the busy shoppers and a rave review from well known singer Peter Corry, who was out shopping.

The lifeboat choir sang a selection of festive favourites, but their most popular piece was Phil Coulter’s lifeboat anthem, Home From The Sea.

Plans are now afoot to explore the possibility of forming a lifeboat choir to sing at various RNLI and community events.

RNLI community fundraising manager Sharon Pollock said, “It was a fantastic night and I hope we managed to brighten up the Christmas shopping for everyone. We were thrilled with the response from the public and they were extremely generous to the lifeboat crew.”
