Road safety workshops held

The Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) is working with a range of partners to make local road users more aware of how to keep themselves and others safe.

The local PCSP are also trying to make local road users aware of the devastation caused by a fatal road traffic collision.

For Road Safety Week 2015, the focus is the young passengers and drivers where drivers may not have the experience to drive to the conditions of the road and passengers may not realise the potentially fatal consequences of distracting the driver.

On Monday 23rd November, the PCSP and its partners engaged with 35 students on the Public Services course at the Southern Regional College Banbridge campus.

The Chair of the ABC PCSP, Alderman Robert Smith, said: “The PCSP is delighted to have the opportunity to engage with young people at the three Southern Regional College campuses in the Council area on such a crucial topic. The Young Passengers And Drivers (YPAD) workshops provide an interactive medium to address key issues such as being distracted by a mobile phone, and the effect on your driving capabilities of even a small amount of drink or drugs.

“The film brings home the reality of not concentrating on your driving even for a couple of seconds.”

The PSNI District Commander for Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon, Superintendent Davy Moore said: “It is vital that we educate our children and young people about road safety from the earliest age. The YPAD sessions are invaluable in making the risks on our roads a reality for people who are just embarking on their driving journey. We hope that the hard hitting message reinforces the full importance of concentrating while driving, paying attention to driving conditions and adhering to the law by wearing a seatbelt, never using a mobile phone while driving, never speeding and never driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

The Education Authority (Southern Region) Area Youth Officer, Roisin McConville, said: “The workshops allow young people time to think and talk about safe driving, and enhance their awareness about the skills and care needed to drive.”
