Roads closed following security alerts

SDLP Lisburn Councillor Pat Catney has condemned the people behind a series of security alerts in the Dunmurry area on Wednesday afternoon which caused widespread traffic chaos and forced some residents to leave their homes.

The alert began shortly after 3pm when roads at Queensway, Dunmurry, Kingsway and Cherry Road were closed.

Police carried out searches in both the Queensway and Upper Dunmurry Lane areas following information suggesting a device had been left in the area. However nothing was found.

Dunmurry was also closed at its junctions with Moss Road and Lambeg Road, Queensway at the McKinstry Road roundabout, the Tullynacross Road was closed at the old Coca Cola factory and Ballyskeagh Road was closed at its junction with River Road.

Mr Catney said: “As a Queensway resident, I was able to see first-hand the fear and disruption that this caused.

“The people behind this security alert, which fortunately was found to be a hoax, do not represent this community and they will not be allowed to prevail.

“I urge anyone with information to contact the PSNI as a matter of priority or, if they prefer, to phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111”
