Roads Service announce improvements

A NUMBER of road improvements due to be carried out in the borough in the coming years have been announced.

Road Service revealed the news during a presentation at Monday night’s mid-monthly council meeting.

The Roads Service’s interim progress report showed that the junction at the Plantation Road and Calvertstown Road is earmarked for work intended to improve visibility for drivers.

It’s expected to be completed by April.

It’s also hoped work can be carried out on the Ballymoney Road in Aghacommon.

Roads Service hopes to instal road humps and speed cushions in the area.

However, the scheme has been delayed due to a small number of objections.

New traffic signs and road markings have been provided in a number of areas in the town, including the Portadown Road, Russell Drive and Union Street.

A number of pedestrian measures will also be built at Lake Road and Church Walk.

SDLP councillor Joe Nelson told the Roads Service representatives he would like to see visibility improvements carried out on the Cornakinnegar Road, which he described as “extremely dangerous”.

He also said that the road markings at the Lake Street/Victoria Street roundabout is “inadequate”, pointing out that there have been a number of accidents at the junction.

Sinn Fein councillor Johnny McGibbon agreed, saying the area has been damaged by “people attacking the community”.
