The refurbishment work will be carried out at night to minimise disruption for motorists, residents and local businesses.

The commitment by Transport Ni comes after residents, together with Lagan Valley MLA Edwin Poots, met with representatives from the Department of Infrastructure, which includes Transpor NI, to express their concerns that the busy road was being left to deteriorate.

“At the meeting Transport NI accepted that the road condition is unacceptable and is in need of substantial work,” explained Mr Poots. “It was pointed out however that Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council are planning a public realm scheme that would make significant improvements to the village. This is unlikely to happen for two or three years as it is in the planning process, but Transport NI would not be prepared to resurface the road knowing such works are anticipated.

“They did accept that it would be unreasonable to do nothing in that period and have therefore agreed to scarify those areas in bad condition as they did recently at Moira roundabout.

“While this is not ideal it should make the situation considerably better until the significant improvement is carried out in conjunction with the public realm work.”

A Transport NI spokesperson said: “Transport NI can confirm that carriageway refurbishment work at Main Street Moira is currently being scheduled.

“The work will be undertaken at night in order to minimise disruption.”
