Mr Eastwood said: “Those of us along the border are well aware of these unfair charges. A trip across the border can end up creating sky high bills for consumers.

“These circumstances have acted as a ridiculous rip-off for those of us who frequently travel between the border.

“They have had negative effects on both business and ordinary consumers alike.

“These steps by the EU hopefully signal the beginning of the end for these unfair charges.

“It is vital however that this is only a first step on the road towards the total eradication of these unfair charges.”
