Roberta’s meeting with Her Majesty

Lurgan and Brownlow Royal British Legion Chairperson Roberta McNally and her husband George met Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Coleraine Town Hall on Wednesday, June 25.

The Queen and Prince Philip were guest of honour at an event hosted by Coleraine Royal British Legion to mark the start of their year of commemoration for those who fought and paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Great War 1914 to 1918.

Roberta, Chairperson of Lurgan and Brownlow RBL, with husband George were amongst the select 50 who attended a buffet with Her Majesty and Prince Philip.

Roberta described the occasion as a “momentous” and “humbling”.

Speaking following the event Roberta said: “This undoubtedly was one of the proudest moments of my life when I met and spoke with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

“I was in disbelief when I was informed that morning that George and I would be amongst the select few to attend the buffet and speak with the Royals.

“Whilst awaiting her arrival I was somewhat nervous given that Her Majesty is our sovereign, she is Head of State and is the patron of the Royal British Legion.

“As someone who has looked up to Crown and country for many decades this was an opportunity not to be missed.

“Upon her arrival there was a flurry of activity and at the moment we realised she was coming to speak to us we automatically were filled with a great sense of pride but yet humbled that someone of such greatness would see fit to speak and take an interest in the work that we undertake in Lurgan and Brownlow.

“Her Majesty spoke with me about my role in the Royal British Legion and she was delighted to hear that as a female I chair a full branch as opposed to a women’s section.

“She also took a distinct interest in my own and my husband’s personal service and enquired about my medals. I was very proud to tell her of my service, and she distinctly thanked both George and I for the years of service we give to her Armed Forces.

“This I believe was a defining moment in my life and I was proud to represent the committee, and members of the Royal British Legion Lurgan and Brownlow branch.

“This in my mind was recognition of the work and effort that we as a Legion do day and daily to help those who have suffered great loss and continue to suffer the scars of war whether it be physical or mentally.

“To meet Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was a great honour and priviledge and a moment in our lives that we certainly will never forget.”
