The investment by Seagate is worth around £35 million, although just 35 new jobs will be created as a result. First Minister Peter Robinson was keen to stress that the research will allow the Londonderry plant to remain at the cutting edge of technology and safeguard the jobs of the hundreds already employed there.

He said: “A job that is consolidated and kept is as good as a job that is brought in. As technology moves on, if you were to lose 1,400 jobs in the North West you would have been the first one to come to me and ask could they not have been protected. They are being protected by this kind of investment. This is an investment for the future to hold the jobs that are here at Seagate against the change in technology that will come in the future.”
