Mid Ulster councillor Cáthal Mallaghan welcomed the speed restriction, which he hopes will increase safety for local people.

“I’m delighted to learn from Western Division manager for Transport NI Conor Loughrey that Rock Village will soon become a 30mph zone for motorists,” he said.

“After a long campaign which has been successful in a number of ways, this move will help to ensure villagers and visitors to this beautiful Tyrone village can enjoy an increased level of safety.

“This was a joint effort which involved myself as the Local Councillor, my colleague Michelle O’Neill MLA, The Rock Community Association, Sacred Heart Primary School, St Patrick’s GAA club and PSNI. The village has recently benefited from a safer routes to school scheme, new public art, a village regeneration scheme and works to local community buildings.

“It’s a great example of how working together can really deliver for local people. We have also been working very hard to secure extra winter gritting and additional road infrastructure improvements.” The Rock Community Group said: “This is excellent news and we hope to further improve and enhance the services and infrastructure for our place. “

The new speed limits should be operational in September.
