Roddensvale pupils get a real kick out of their new play area

Representatives from Wooden Spoon head office gathered together with Larne officer Tom Lyttle, officials from the NE Board, school governors and other invited guests to formally acknowledge the completion of the scheme.

Principal John Madden said: “We are highly delighted with the finished play are which will extend pupils opportunities to learn through play.

“The benefits to pupils’ social interaction, physical development, general health and well being are well documented with regard to the learning through play and physical activity. The entire school community owe a great of thanks to the Wooden Spoon charity who funded the Lions share of the project if Willie John will excuse the pun!

“Our thanks also go to Conrad Williams and Louise Weatherhead who initially raised £5,000 towards the scheme at the outset and it was Louise who made the link to Wooden Spoon which finally lead to the completion of the project.”

The state-of-the-art scheme consists of an extension to nursery play area with swings, interactive panels, outside chalk board, sand tray and covered awning. In addition there is a general play area which has an exciting new slide for pupils together with basket swings and other pieces of stimulating play equipment. All of the above has been finished to a very high safety standard by the Crawford Group in association with the NE Board.”

Chair of Governors at Roddensvale, Dr Herbie Baird said: “It is very pleasing to see such a positive recent development taking place at the school for the benefit of the entire school community.

“Governors try to support major initiatives like this and are grateful to all those involved in the scheme. It is hoped that the playground will provide a lasting legacy for generations of pupils to enjoy and we as Governors hope to continue to support other projects the Roddensvale community aspire to achieve at the school in the near future.”

Willie John McBride cut the yellow ribbon to officially open the new Wooden Spoon play areas at Roddensvale and all those in attendance viewed the fine facilities and enjoyed seeing pupils use the equipment.
