The Termoncanice and Limavady Grammar old boy won three separate awards after averaging 96 per cent as a junior freshman.

Ronan told the paper: “I won three awards, the Liberty IT prize, the McCrea-Leebody award and I also won the Lucid Interactive prize. The awards are for the best Computing student overall in first year and the McCrea-Leebody award is across Jordanstown, Coleraine and Magee. It was for academic performance in first year. I got an overall average of 96 per cent.”

Proud parents Liam and Tina, from the Edenmore Road area, said the signs were there from a very early age.

Mum Tina said: “We used to wonder...when he was about five, he used to go in and change the settings, we didn’t know anything about computers. So you had a long term plan really.”

Ronan is not one to sit on his hands and shortly after completing his first year at Magee he completed two months of work experience with Liberty IT in Belfast.

He’s also provided instruction in software and Information and Computer Technology at North West Life Long Learning Association (NWLLA) in Ballykelly as a volunteer.

But in the long term? “I’d love to be computer programmer, making software, games, things like that.” Looks like he’s well on that road.
