Principal Jacqueline Stewart gave the undertaking while welcoming the announcement the North-Eastern Region of the Education Authority has dedicated funding to replace the existing flat root on the building.

Mrs Stewart said: “Downshire was built with a flat roof in 1977 and over the years has caused major problems by leaking in a number of places.

“Following years of numerous repairs and patching, the school’s campaign for a new roof has been successful and work is to start next week.”

Mrs Stewart added that she is delighted with the outcome and “wishes to reassure parents and pupils that disruption will be kept to a minimum”. Work should be finished by late February 2016.

The principal also extended thanks to the North East Region of the Education Authority for endeavouring to maintain the roof over the years and for its confidence in Downshire School in releasing funding for this major work.

Tom Creighton MBE, chair of the board of governors, noted that the governors, school leadership team, caretaking and cleaning staff work extremely hard to keep the building to the highest of standards so that pupils and staff can learn and teach in a pleasant and well-equipped environment.

The addition of a brand new roof, he stated, will be the “icing on the cake”.

Mrs Stewart added that this scheme will allow Downshire Community School to “further develop it’s excellent work with the young people in it’s care and continue to build for the future”.

As well as a school, Downshire is used as a youth centre, outcentre for adult education and by local clubs and organisations.

East Antirm MLA Roy Beggs also welcomed the announcement the project has secured funding.

The Ulster Unionist representative commented: “I had previously lobbied on behalf of the school for a new roof, so this announcement is excellent news.

The securing of funding for the work on a new roof is certainly a big step in the right direction. I look forward to the work commencing in due process.”
