Rossa club entrance plan welcomed by Sinn Fein

“This filter-lane along with the proposed cycle and footpath can only help to alleviate the ongoing problems at this entry. In the recent past we have seen a number of collisions and near-misses along this stretch of road,” she said.

“I, and my Sinn Féin colleagues, have been lobbying Road Service for many months to see that this issue is addressed before there is a more serious or tragic incident.

“The work is to be carried out alongside the road resurfacing scheduled for July of this year and should be completed during the summer months. I would like to commend and congratulate the ‘pressure group’ that came together to highlight this serious concern. I would also thank Francie Molloy, now MP for the area, for bringing about the joint meeting with the Minister, Danny Kennedy, and Roads Service which has resulted in this outcome.”

The pressure group consisted of Sean Kerr, then Chairman of O’Donovan Rossa GAC, Sgt. Donna Bowden, PSNI, Enda Quinn, Milltown Community Group, Fr John Gates and Sinn Féin Councillors Deborah NíShiadhail and Peter Bateson.

“This can only enhance the safety of those accessing the facility and also those traveling and walking along this busy road. I am delighted, also, that DRD have agreed to extend the cycle and footpath to the Castledawson roundabout during the second phase of the road improvement scheme.

“I will be seeking assurance that this will be carried out without delay and continue to lobby that consideration should be give to both sides of the road.”
