Rotary Club awards for '˜exemplary students'

Members of the Rotary Club of Newtownabbey held a special meeting recently to present six local students with '˜Exemplary Conduct and Unselfish Service Awards'.

The club’s 2015/16 president, Leonard Sproule handed over certificates and prizes to Lydia Mills (Ballyclare High School), Alexandra Nelson (Belfast High School), Pearse McFaul (Edmund Rice College), Lee McClelland (Hill Croft School), Darragh Dickey (Jordanstown School) and Jack Bradshaw (Thornfield House School).

Presenting the awards, Mr Sproule acknowledged the young people’s “significant contribution to the life of their school and community.”

Congratulating them on their awards, he added that their conduct was “an expression of the very ideal upon which Rotary was founded - ‘Service Above Self’.”

Meanwhile, the Rotary Club of Newtownabbey, in conjunction with Ulster University, held its annual KidsOut Day at the university’s Jordanstown campus recently.

More than 90 young people with special needs from Hill Croft School, Jordanstown School, Rosstulla School and Thornfield House School took part in indoor kurling sessions.

Presenting the young participants with certificates and medals, Mr Sproule said the event had brought happiness to many children.

He thanked the university for its support, and the teachers and staff for their hard work in making the day “a great success.”
