Rotary Club bursary

The bursary is now in its tenth year having been launched in 2004 to commemorate the club’s 50th anniversary.

The scheme is open to young people who might be taking a year out or hoping to volunteer on some worthwhile project at home or abroad during 2014.

The top award is worth £500 and a further £500 may be offered in the form of discretionary awards between runners up who put forward interesting and worthwhile projects.

All applications for the 2014 must be received by the Club Secretary not later than March 31. Application forms can be down-loaded from the Rotary Club of Lisburn website www.lisburnrotary.co.uk.

In 2012 Mark Fair from Lisburn won the top Bursary award of £500 which he used to help with his expenses on a 12 month placement with Project Trust. He had accepted a teaching post at a secondary school situated deep in the Amazon Rainforest.

On his recent return from Guyana, Mark made a short presentation to the Rotary Club telling members a little of his wonderful experiences during his 12 months there.

Other successful applicants have travelled to Gambia on a literacy project, to Mexico to help street children, to Northern India to help a community there and to France to work in a home for disadvantaged people.

Some of the students have elected to spend just three weeks on their tour.

The winner of the 2014 Bursary will be announced before May 31.
