Rotary Club bursary applications to open

The Rotary Club of Lisburn launched an annual Bursary in 2004 to mark the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Club.

A Trust Fund was set up to manage the Bursary awards. This Bursary is primarily intended for people aged between 18 and 30 considering taking time out within a course of study before going to University or joining the world of work.

The Bursary is used to assist successful candidates to help disadvantaged people and communities at home or overseas. The top award is worth £500 and smaller amounts up to a further £500 may be offered in the form of discretionary awards to “runners up” who put forward interesting and worthwhile projects.

In 2015 Rosy Woods from Moira gained the top award of £500 which she used towards her travel and health insurance having been accepted as a Mission Intern for ‘Urban Promise’ in Toronto, Canada where she assists with the spiritual care of children and youths living ‘at risk’ in and around the city of Toronto.

Rosy said: “This is a 12 month posting where I will be trained in counselling skills which I hope to use to benefit families within the communities.

“This will include offering activities they wouldn’t get the chance to do and forming mechanisms for them to use in their daily lives”.

Rosy hopes to enter university following her return in August and has arranged deferred offers for September 2016. Applications close on 31st March and the winner of the 2016 Bursary will be announced before 31st May 2016.
