Rotary winner Ruth is off to Strasbourg

A student from Coleraine Grammar School has won a prestigious trip to the heart of the European Union in Strasbourg, organised by Rotary Ireland.

The Rotary Club of Coleraine was delighted to see one of their nominees, Ruth Mullan, win a place after they recently hosted the Rotary Ireland Youth Leadership Competition at the Lodge Hotel in Coleraine.

he competition is a nationwide Rotary event and during the last month 119 young people from 22 schools covering the Rotary clubs of Coleraine, Ballymoney, Ballycastle, Limavady, Ballymoney Dungannon, Larne and Carrickfergus have been involved in a rigorous competition. It is aimed at pupils aged 16 -18 and gives young people an opportunity to develop their leadership and networking skills.

The eight area winners were selected by their local Rotary Clubs and competed in the area finals in Coleraine. Each were interviewed on a variety of topics covering topical issues in Europe, Community and Environmental issues, the future of the European Union, leadership skills and Rotary.

After a hard day of interviews and assessment, Ruth was joined by Christopher McKee (Limavady) and Rebecca Richardson (Dungannon) as the winners from the area. They will join 21 winners from the island of Ireland for a week’s leadership training at the end of January 2017, including a trip to Strasbourg.

Ruth, Christopher and Rebecca will visit Stormont, Belfast and Dublin to meet local leaders and politicians. They will then travel to Strasbourg to join 400 other young people and debate a range of issues in the European Parliament.

The experience will help them forge new friends, face and overcome new challenges and learn about the world’s number one voluntary organisation, “Rotary”.

The project is jointly funded by Rotary Ireland and Euroscala.
