Rotting body of dog found in garden undergrowth

THIS was the sickening scene which a shocked homeowner was confronted with when the rotting carcass of a dead dog was found in their garden.

The horrific discovery was made between Balnamore and Bendooragh last week and it is thought the dead dog was dumped by a passer-by at a property on the Drumahiskey Road.

The dog was not connected with the unwitting resident who was faced with the stomach-churning discovery in undergrowth.

And there was further tragedy when a second dog died later.

The dog found dead at the scene was a Collie Cross black/tan/white dog with very distinctive tan spots on its lower legs. It was estimated to be four or five months old.

The other dog passed away on Thursday night. It had contracted the highly contagious parvovirus.

The second dog was a white greyhound of similar age to the dead pup. It was found “underweight, malnourished and horrendously neglected,” according to Ballymoney Council’s Environmental Warden Karen Mitchell.

The greyhound pup was subsequently taken in by Ballymoney Borough Council. It then was undergoing veterinary treatment at a local practice but sadly passed away.

Karen said: “It was extremely poorly and in a very weak condition. We named him Monty after General Montgomery as he was a little trooper to have endured so much.”

Mrs Mitchell is ashamed that nobody looked for help for these maltreated dogs. She is concerned that the owner of these dogs may have others who “may be at risk of becoming sick.”

Karen believes that both dogs were “dumped” on the Drumahiskey Road sometime between the evening of September 12 and the morning of September 13.

Mrs. Mitchell is disgusted by the sheer act of negligence towards both dogs.

She said: “The way in which these pups have been treated is disgusting and I hope that these people do not have any more dogs as they are obviously not fit to look after them. Dogs are great companions, they give a lot and expect so little in return. I find it absolutely appalling that anyone allowed them to be neglected like this.”

The Environmental Warden is making an urgent plea to anyone who may find themselves in a similar predicament or know of any other dog owners who are putting their pets in danger to contact her immediately.

Karen is urging anyone who may know the owner of the dogs or has any information to please come forward confidentially on 02827660257.
