Craigavon Council tonight voted to fly the Union flag 365 days per year at the Borough’s Civic Centre following a blazing row regarding an equality assessment report on flag flying.

Despite the report, which cost around £10,000, stating that a majority of those involved in the consultation preferred either flying both flags or no flags, the DUP put forward a new proposal requesting the Union Flag be flown at the Civic Centre 365 days per year.

Policy had been for 12 years that the flag was flown on designated days only.

Sinn Fein’s proposal that no flags be flown was rejected, as was an Alliance proposal that the status quo be maintained for the duration of Craigavon Council.
