Royal Irish Rangers veterans at the Somme

Members of the Lisburn branch of the Royal Irish Rangers Old Comrades Association recently returned from a visit to the Somme.

The veterans paid their respects at war graves in Belgium and France during the week long visit.

As well as visiting the site of the Battle of the Somme, the men also had the privilege of providing a guard of honour at Menin Gate.

During their visit Lisburn man Jim Spence laid a cross at the Arras Memorial, where his Great Uncle, Francis Neagle, who was killed during the First World War, is remembered.

The men presented a Lisburn City plaque at both Menin Gate and at St George’s Memorial Church in Ypres, whhich was built as a permanent memorial to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
