RSPB activist kayaks from Derg to Atlantic

A KEEN bird watcher and wild-life conservationist recently made an epic source-to-sea kayak trip from the upper Derg to the Atlantic ocean.

Just Kayak, a canoeing centre based at Moville, recently guided Claire Ferry of the RSPB on the trip.

Claire has been walking around Northern Ireland to raise awareness about bird reserves.

On hearing this, the Loughs Agency suggested she do the trip through the Foyle catchment by canoe – to rest her feet - and also to learn something of the fish and birdlife of this salmon and wild trout fishery.

Adrian Harkin of Just Kayak kindly volunteered the loan of a kayak and his services as an experienced river and sea guide.

Adrian said: “I met Claire on the upper Derg and we quickly made progress down this beautiful valley. Andy from the Loughs Agency met us at Abercorn Estates fishing lodge with coffee and scones.

“While there, Claire had an interesting conversation about the interaction of fish and birds with local ghillie Robert Freeburn!”

He continued: “That afternoon, we paddled the River Mourne as far as Lifford, seeing kingfisher, sandpiper and other birds along the way.”

On day two, the group followed the Foyle Canoe Trail, a Loughs Agency project developed in conjunction with CAAN (Countryside Access and Activities Network).

This trail follows the Foyle from Lifford to Moville. A trail guide has been produced which provides information on access points, camping options, navigation guidance and places of interest. More information is available at www.canoeni.com/canoe-trails.

The trip along the Foyle proved special! This wide 15 mile long, tidal river is quite unique in many ways and offers great paddling.

With a favourable wind, Adrian rafted the kayaks, erected a sail and was pushed down river by the wind – a bonus for Claire’s weary limbs and an opportunity to relax and take in the Donegal and Sperrins skyline.

RSPB’s Claire Ferry enthused: “The two days were such a great experience, and being on the river gave me a whole new perspective on the countryside in this area.

“The short stretches of white water were exciting and then it was so quiet and peaceful on the calm stretches. We saw some great wildlife including river birds like kingfishers and dippers, but the highlight had to be getting close up views of an otter rolling and diving just in front of the boat – wonderful!”
