RSPB to host Halloween Red Kite fright event

THE RSPB is bringing its frighteningly exciting Red Kite Fright event to Londonderry this Halloween.

Watch out for witches and ghouls amongst the cobwebs and mist. Be enchanted by a red kite chick trail that gives you a chance to discover more about this bird of prey.

The wildlife-conservation charity is holding its event at the River Watch Visitor Centre and Aquarium, Loughs Agency, Londonderry on October 30, 2010.

Wildlife Explorer members and their friends are invited to join the team from 10am to 12pm for a packed morning delving into the spookier world of nature.

RSPB Youth & Education Assistant, Jen Martelli Brown, has unveiled some of the "trick or treats" in store.

"We've concocted a special witch's brew for our members' morning containing a workshop on birds of prey, nocturnal creature games, and spooky food for garden birds. We've also concocted a red kite 'potion' and a few 'scary snacks' for our young members," she said.

The event is open to the public from 2-4 pm and it will be an afternoon of fun for all the family. Take part in red kite crafts and mask making, fun and games and much, much more.

The reintroduction of the red kite to Northern Ireland is one of the proudest accomplishments for RSPB's Red Kite Officer Robert Straughan who will be there to share his knowledge of these awe inspiring birds of prey.

He will also conduct a spooky outdoor trail for the red kite chick that a witch has hidden.

"Over the last three years we've released 80 red kites into Northern Ireland and they've started breeding this year," he said. "Why not come along and find out more about these wonderful birds of prey – and don't forget your scariest fancy dress."

Numbers are essential for members' morning. Book by contacting RSPB NI directly on 02890491547. Afternoon proceedings are open to everyone with no booking required. For more information visit http://www.rspb.org.uk/youth/index.asp
