Rubbish at Park raises a stink

A WATERSIDE resident has hit out at Derry City Council for failing to control litter at Kilfennan Country Park.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said the issue is causing great concern in the area and he has resorted to clearing rubbish himself in an attempt to alleviate the problem.

In one particular case the man pointed out a bin which he said was full of dog excrement and had not been emptied for months.

"The country park has become a dumping ground for all sorts of rubbish including discarded toys. I have even lifted rubbish myself," he said.

The Kilfennan resident also called for the establishment of dedicated litter wardens for both sides of the river and said that the litter issue in the Waterside was not just confined to the country park but was rife all over the Crescent Link district as well.

DUP MLA William Hay said the issue was the responsibility of council and said he had received many calls on the issue.

"Nobody appears to be maintaining the area. People use the country park for walking and walking their dogs. I have seen bins overflowing and dog dirt everywhere.

"Whilst this is an ongoing issue it has been discussed at council and we are hoping for a one-off general clean up by council and make sure it is maintained properly after that."

However, Mr Hay also appealed to dog owners and other park users to act responsibly when in the area and not to exacerbate the issue with inconsiderate behaviour.

A spokesperson for Derry City Council stated that it will investigate the report of litter within Kilfennan Country Park and take action over the coming days to rectify any problems.
