SAFETY FIRST AT GLENSHANE PARK AND SHARE

A NEW park and share facility close to the busy Castledawson Roundabout is due to open shortly to the public.

Work is nearing completion on the upgrade which is aimed at improving safety for road users.

It involved the expansion of the existing facility and the relocation of the bus stops from the A6 Glenshane Road to within the car park.

Local politicians called for the bus stops to be relocated following the tragic death of student Caoimhe Kerr from Magherafelt in November 2008.

The 22-year-old student was struck by a van after getting off a bus close to the roundabout.

DUP councillor Anne Forde this week welcomed the completion of the park and share facility.

“The facility should be available to the public within the next two weeks,” she explained. “This is a very busy and dangerous location and the provision of this facility will be welcomed by all members of the travelling public.”

SDLP councillor Jim Campbell said the development was most welcome and long over-due.

“I actually called for this many years ago really to stop the practice of motorists doing u-turns on the road,” he said.

“The provision of the park and share should stop these dangerous manoeuvres and make the area a lot safer.”
