Safety will be highest priority on new A5 works

ROADS Minister Conor Murphy says safety will be given the highest priority at the few intersections where the proposed new multi-million pound A5 Western Transport Corridor (WTC) crosses the old Londonderry to Aughnacloy route.

Mr Murphy said the proposed new road is almost entirely separate from the existing road and that this will help minimise disruption as construction takes place over the next few years.

The Roads Minister outlined his assessment of the safety issues pertaining to the project in response to a query tabled at the Northern Ireland Assembly.

He commented: “The proposed route for the A5 Western Transport Corridor dual carriageway is almost entirely off-line from the existing A5.

“This will bring safety benefits for both road users and construction workers and will also help to minimise traffic disruption. Where the new road crosses the existing A5 and where it ties in at junctions, safety will be given the highest priority.

“Various measures such as temporary diversions, traffic lights and night working will all be employed to reduce the impact of the works.”
