Said brakes had locked up

When he crashed into a van in front of him a 21-year-old man claimed that his brakes had locked causing him to go into a skid.

Daniel Cairns, Acre Road, Magheralin, was fined £75 last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for driving without due care and attention on May 20 this year. He was also given three points.

The court heard that at 7pm an accident happened at the junction of the Belfast Road and Ballymacbredan Road, Magheralin. A van, which was turning right, was rear ended by the defendant’s vehicle.

When interviewed by police Cairns said that he saw the van stop to turn right and put his brakes on but they locked and he went into a skid.

The defendant did not appear in court but in a letter he apologised for what happened and said he had never before been in trouble with police.
