Sailing event on Foyle fordisabled

The Foyle Sailability Regatta, which is open to those with disabilities and their carers, takes place on June 11 and 12 at the new Baronet Street pontoon, where a hoist and qualified sailing instructors will be on hand during the event to help participants. The equipment is specifically designed to meet disabled peoples’ needs from accessible pontoons to the boats.

This will be the first time that The Foyle has hosted a fleet of accessible dinghies for people with disabilities. A fully accessible powered Sea Rover will also be available to take passengers on short trips. Other boats will also be available for trips.

Sailing allows people with disabilities can participate on equal terms with others.

If you want to take part or be successful in sailing, then having a disability is no obstacle. Carers are also very welcome.

Foyle Sailability is determined to make sure as many people as possible, regardless of type or severity of disability, have the chance to discover what sailing could do for them, and when they do attend Sailability sessions, they have the best experience, on and off the water.

The initiative is supported by local political representatives, The Loughs Agency, Derry City Council, WHSCT, Foyle Disability Resource Centre, Foyle Port, Lough Foyle Yacht Club, Moville Boat Club, Ocean Youth Trust, Royal Yachting Association, Lough Swilly Yacht Club, Belfast Lough Sailability and a wide range of disability organisations.
