The new jobs are across the store in the café, fresh food counters, bakery, grocery and customer services as well as the online department. It will bring the total number employed in the store to 300 adding almost 1,000 extra hours of employment to the store.

Over the coming weeks Sainsbury’s will also recruit for more than 150 seasonal roles across its stores in Northern Ireland to help cope with the Christmas and New Year rush. It is hoped that many of these jobs will become permanent.

Nigel Macaulay, Regional Operations Manager for Sainsbury’s said: “We have been listening to the needs of our customers in the northwest and it is fantastic to be able to now provide the Derry/Londonderry area with an online shopping service which will be launching on 20th November as well as an extended and upgraded store offering.”

Steven Pollock, Sainsbury’s Strand Road store manager added: “We have been working hard to ensure that the on-going work will be carried out with minimum disruption for customers. We are doing the vast majority of the work while the store is still open but we will have a one week closure next week from 5th- 12th November to finalise the process.”
