Samaritans seek volunteers

SAMARITANS provide 24 hour emotional support to people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair in their lives including those which may lead to suicide. Volunteers offer support by responding to phone calls, emails and texts. Alternatively people can drop in to a branch to have a face to face meeting.

The local branch at 16 Clarendon street is open from 10am to 10pm daily for face to face callers. People can also ring them on 71 265511 or email [email protected]. An information evening is being held on Thursday, January 27 in the centre at 16 Clarendon street and it starts at 7.30pm.

Samaritans volunteers listen in confidence to anyone in any type of emotional distress, without judging or telling people what to do.

Samaritans doesn’t offer advice, but by encouraging people who contact us to talk about their feelings we are able to help them explore all the options they have. Samaritans believes that given the time and space to work problems or difficulties through in confidence, people can find an inner strength and perspective which lets them find their own way forward

In addition to listening there are also other ways people can get involved in volunteering with Samaritans. These include administration, fundraising and reaching out in the community. Samaritans provide training and support for all of these roles.
