Sample a new year full of activities

a NEW year of opportunities is awaiting members of East Antrim U3A (University of the Third Age) with an invitation extended to anyone interested in attending taster sessions to find out if they would like to join this fun, social and friendly organisation.

At the last meeting, chairman David Nesbitt invited group leaders to outline the various activities and outings groups have been enjoying, together with their plans for 2012.

Walking-group leader, Rodney Lurring spoke of their Christmas lunch at Drumalis retreat, a fun day out with excellent food in scenic surroundings enjoyed by all. The next walk on January 13 will be in the Belmont Hills walking from Knocknagoney to Holywood followed by refreshments. Reading group spokesperson, Nuala Baxter, thanked all who attended their Christmas meal, agreeing the food and entertainment was first class.

Harry Bates enthused of the success of the Opera Shingleside experience, thanking all members for such wonderful support. February 10-11 will be a showing of Don Pasquale.

The Music and Theatre group meets again February 6 to enjoy a sing-along, present views on favourite artists and arrange a programme of theatre outings. Gadabouts’ leader Roderick Acheson advised members of their memorable outing to Stormont in December.

For the Gardening group, Margaret Franklin advised on February 17 an outing had been arranged to visit Donaghadee garden centre then in May are due to visit Benvarden garden centre. This group meet the third Monday morning of each month.

Family History leader, David Nicholl, advised members their group have welcomed three new members. This group will meet in January to set out their 2012 programme of research and outings. Military History including Navy, Army and Air Force, is a group Terry Shiels would be happy to start up and lead. If you are interested in the history, or have any information regarding military services that feel you would like to share, please come along to the next meeting to be held in Joymount Church Hall, Carrickfergus, starting at 2pm on Monday, January 16.
