Sat in middle of William Street

She was Elizabeth Mary Hughes, Rectory Road, Lurgan, and she admitted a number of offences last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

For disorderly on June 20 this year she was sentenced to two months in prison while she was given three months for assaulting a constable and two months for resisting an officer.

All three sentences were suspended for two years.

The court heard police were heading for a serious domestic incident in Princes Street, Lurgan, but in William Street the defendant stepped in front of the police vehicle.

She was asked to move but refused and sat in the middle of the road. She made a rude hand gesture to police and said profanities.

She refused to give police her details and attempted to strike an officer in the face. She had to be handcuffed.

In the rear of the police vehicle she kicked an officer on the leg.

The case had been adjourned so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.

A barrister representing the defendant said she was deeply embarrassed by her behaviour.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said the defendant had been getting a lot of help in relation to her difficulties.

He added that given all the factors a suspended sentence would be appropriate.
