Savage sets his priorities

"IT'S the economy, stupid!"

That’s the message coming from the UUP’s George Savage.

The Ulster Unionist MLA has put the economy at the top of his ‘to-do’ list as the Assembly gets back into action.

He said: “We find ourselves in uncharted waters. We face economic difficulties not seen since the Great Depression of the 1930s. The Northern Ireland Executive is briefing external agencies that there will be massive cuts in public spending to the tune of 2 billion.

“Such a situation is unprecedented. The scale of the problem is enormous, as is the serious impact this will have on families across Northern Ireland. I don’t wish to cause fear or unnecessary concern but it is my belief that this winter, with the sharp decline in the economy, a chill will be sent through the very fabric of our society bringing little comfort, if any, to many families.

“With the sharp decline in areas such as construction, it is up to the Assembly and the Executive to chart a course through these difficult times and help lead us back into prosperity.

“In this day and age people have little confidence in their elected officials, trust needs to be restored. The most effective way this can be achieved is by making a difference in people’s everyday lives, making decisions that will help put food on the table.

“Improving the economy is vital for the well being of our local businesses, for faith in politics and politicians, and for the future generations of Northern Ireland. Nothing, at this moment in time, can be more important.

“The people of Upper Bann can rest assured that I will be doing all I can in the Assembly to make a difference, especially on this issue and to help keep Northern Ireland moving forward.”
